Great Day on the Water

Happy Mother's Day

We spent Mother's Day on the river at the Walk-In.  It was a beautiful day.

The walk-in is still giving out fish mid-day, but not as consistently.  The water was low on Sunday when we fished just above the Paria Riffle.  Our main fly of choice was a midge(depending on color).

Low Water Saturday

We had low water today and attacked the fish 3 different ways.  Each proved to be successful.


 First, when wading we used our standard midging rig.  Second, we anchored and fished from the boat.  We midged the top of seams and threw streamers in the bottom.  We finished out the day drifting.  With low water and a high fish population, fishing stayed good all day.

May Day

Fishing upriver has improved.  As with the walk-in report, the fish have been active all day.  The only time fishing slows slightly is when the water drops after lunch.

We started the day throwing our suspended midging rig.  In the morning, we ran 36 inches to the first fly and a standard 16-18 to the dropper.  Sizes of the midge stay consistent with a size 16.  When the flow increased throughout the morning, we kept an eye on our length and continued to lengthen the first fly as necessary.  I caught several hatches in my hat today and all were black bodied.  Using this information my first fly was a standard 16 Black Zebra used alongside my favorite dropper.  We continued using these rigs all day and never looked back.

At lunch, I had a private boat anchor too close so we busted out the olive wooly bugger which always works when used in a streamer.  We caught fish off their bow which sent them and their spin rods on their way.  Something to keep in mind when you are planning your day, springtime afternoon winds come like clockwork.  At the end of the day we targeted the last of the spawners and sight fished.  When sight fishing, you have to have all your ducks in a row and persistence pays off. Last Day of April.

Well the Swallows have arrived and that means one thing, there here for the midges.  Our midge hatch is in full swing.  Coming off the Walk in this afternoon we will start there.  We started our day around noon, we only saw a couple people out at that time of the day.  With the weather warming up I believe that most anglers are waiting for the morning and evening bites.  That was the case for most success a few weeks ago, but with hatches coming off all day the fish are feeding while the food is there.  I set my guys up with two rigs, one was our suspended midge set up running about three feet to the first fly and around 18'' to the second fly.  On the other rod we dead drifted a olive wooly bugger, trailing it with a size 16 midge just a couple inches shorter than the suspended rig.  Fish were active from the moment we got there tell we left around 4pm.  I wish I could share my secret color midge that has been my only color of choice, but I have to keep my favorites mine.  Dont get me wrong I have no problem showing you, but only on the water.  Biggest tip and we cant preach enough to catch fish at the Ferry is the "Dead Drift".  Fish are very selective but will eat most sizes and colors as long as you have a correct drift. Fishing up river with a good water flows through the week days have made for good fishing all day. Fish have been healthy and with full belly's. With the Midge hatches coming on stronger and more often through the days it has been my only fly the last few trips. A standard zebra midge or a color of the days choice, running it with our 6 foot midging rig and another 16-20 inches to your dropper works really well in slower runs through seams on gravel bars. Fish have been very shallow so start close to shore when you start to fish then work your way out. Nymphing rigs with anywhere from a #1-4 split shot depending on speed and depths works well on nice fish on the outer sides of the seams in deeper water. On my lunch breaks I always can bomb a 200 grain depth charge with a olive flash woolly bugger and hook into a couple so don't forget about streamers. Hit a nice swing of water were you can throw into current and let it swing back into a seam or eddy and start stripping. Fish have been hitting it on the swing with both rigs so with the midges wait that extra 5 seconds and let it swing up at the end of your run and you might be surprised. For streamers be ready on the swing to set before it reaches your strip back in.

Walk In-

The Walk In has been fishing really well and producing a wide variety of fish. The rig of choice is a short Nymphing rig. Glow bugs and Midges have been working well. The weekends have been running lower water flows then the weekdays so it makes alot more nice little runs and kick outs at the top of the boulder field. At the back side of any rock that makes a seam or shoot I have been throwing above them allowing my flys to get down and run it through every one starting close to shore and working my way out as far as you want or have the energy to handle. Just above the Paria is a nice gravel bar that has been fishing good as well. The midge color always will change thru the day the main key for fishing success on lees ferry up river or down is a dead drift presention is everything. If your not getting a drag free drift (dead drift) your missing out on fish. If you need help or not sure how this works were always available to teach you how. Tell next time keep your lines tight.
